Title: Keep this forum alive.
Post by: Patrice Terrier on January 14, 2012, 09:21:39 AM
Since a few days i only have random access to this forum.

If you remember well, 6 monthes ago (in august 2011) there was a major server collapse that forced José to restore everything, and it was a very long process to put his forum back on track (tooks me more than a whole week work just to restore my own contributions).

I think it is time to help José to keep his forum alive, giving him the money to buy a new server he could manage directly.

Then, what do you think of starting a subscription to keep this forum alive ?

José, perhaps you already have a paypal account, where we can send you the money ?

Hi Patrice,

Thanks for your good intentions, but I don't want to have my own server. My free time is limited now and I can not waste it dealing with internet providers, fighting spammers, making backups, etc. In the past six months I have been unable to do anything new, and I'm above all a programmer, not a forum manager. Let's see if I can find a convenient solution.

José,

My main concern was to find a solution to protect you from another major server collapsus, like the one that occured last year.

Some providers are offering mirroring and automatic backup, then you do not have to do it yourself, and in case of problem they can restore everything in a matter of hours...

But this service would come at a price, and i think it would be legitimate that you don't have to support the extra charge yourself...

By the way i have now a complete copy of all the ZIP files i have posted here, just in case we have to restore them again  :)

José--

QuoteFar from being stupid, I think it could be the most convenient option. No need to visit another forum, no need to spend money, easier access and communication...

Hum hum... i think that would be the end.

What i like in your forum is that, even if we could have some preference, we are not infeodated to one specific language, this is something of much value for many of us.

From today 12:00 we are "over the bridge" with the forum.

After that time nobody should get any errors and we should have the same good loading times like ever.

Came right up for me instantly Theo! :)   Thank you very much!  And Jose too!

I'll discard the whole topic later, as it doesn't make much sense.
The forum is alive and it will be alive unless Jose wants it to die.

(especially when i want to edit my existing messages)

Anyway, thank you both,  for all your efforts !

To my information, we are now ready for ten times the amount of users then until now.
I can say that here i have perfect performance.

If your performance is worth i doubt its because of the forum.

Theo,

The problem i have, is only with this forum when i click on any of the links inside of it.

I do not encounter problems with other web-site.

I am using IE9, most of the time, but i shall make some tests with FireFox and Chrome to see how it goes.

This one is posted from Chrome, and it seems to run just fine.

This one is done from Mozilla FireFox, and it seems to work as good as Chrome, except when i press on the save button from the Editor.

IE 6 and Chrome are actually my prefered browsers.
While i had to drop IE 6 because Jose doesn't like it  ;D

Now from here with Google Chrome, the forum is really fast.

Anybody out there using Chrome and still suffering with performance problems?

It is working fine for me so far using FireFox 7.0.1.

Jim

I also have randomly the same kind of problem when clicking on a link to this forum.

For example this morning, when i get via my e-mail the notification link to your message, i couldn't get in from my Windows Live mail.

However closing Internet explorer, and waiting a few seconds, then using the link from my favorite page i could open the main forum page almost instantaneously.

Then moving to your post, i could see it, but again i had to wait almost 10 seconds after clicking on the thumbnail image to see it maximized.

I have checked the forum up and down from here.

Other users like Peter Weiss and Jose also report that the problems are gone.

Here I have always instant perfect loading times.

My impression is that the SMF Forum in the new SMF version (afeter the update)  needs a little bit more computing power on the client side.
And needs more script-resources on the server side.

But actually  it works. And i do not see any problems or even latencies on the server side from here.

Of course i want anybody to report problems with the forum to Jose or me.

While, before doing so, try a traceroute and check if you may have other problems in your network.
Or if you have script blocking Anti-Virus programs (that can also slow things down).

Right now (I'd been away a day or two) it seems to be working about as good as it ever did Theo.  Whatever you've been tweaking seems to have helped.

So, everything new seems to need a little more memory and computing power, Eh?  I think I've run into that before! :)

I have also opened a new Post, "Performance Monitoring". Anybody who has further problems can post his experiences there,
It must be possible to host small forum with 1&1, also. I had to explain that to the customer service lately.
And i told them, if it doesn't work it may have consequences. Let's see if it will hold.
I believe that these hosters always try to put as many people as posssible on one server to save costs..

Used Google Chrome and IE8. Loads fast enough.

I still have very long delay to access this forum, and to navigate from one section to another using the links.

This occure randomly, and most of the time when loading something that is not already in the cache, and the symptoms are the same whatever the browser being used.

I really want to keep this forum alive, as i couldn't see how the José's Corner on the PowerBASIC forum could replace this board (except for a convenient repository of his excellent PowerBASIC headers).

I don't plan to close anything. I just want to see if I find a way that DDT'ers could use my headers without conflicts with his exisiting PB 10 code.

I also had a bit longer reaction times today. Jose told me that there are ongoing hacking attempts.
At this time i have no reason to assume that these were successfull.
But due to a larger number of traffic by these hackers, the performance may be a bit slower the normal.

Until now we are just watching and hoping the thing will run dead from itself.
If it doesn't we'll think of more things that can be done.
